Here’s to the Legendary E! Street! Fans!!! @nilslofgren @springsteen

2013 was the best summer of my life. Bruce is the reason, I toured a lot following him, memories I will cherish forever. And one of my fondest memories is when at the final show of the European Tour Bruce and the Band offered a thank you to all the fans there gathered. It was at the end of the show, they were playing Shout! rocking the crowd as usual. Then came the part of the “You’ve just witnessed the the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, hard-rocking, booty-shaking, love-making, earth-quaking, Viagra-taking, justifying, death-defying, legendary E STREET BAND!” and then Bruce and the band went on with a salute to the fans. Bruce cried aloud:  “ticket-seeking, hotel-booking, money-juggling, plane-taking, train-riding, queue-forming, tramp-meeting, feet-throbbing, back-breaking, burger-eating, rain-enduring, music-loving, Boss-following, legendary E! Street! Fans!” and on the last line all the band, even Max, raised and shouted it: Legendary E STREET FANS! wow. I’ve got shivers up my spine just remembering it. Thank you Bruce, for bringing joy and meaning to all of us.

All’s Well That Ends Well

I live about two hours drive from Cannes, where Bruce last year attended a horse show because of his daughter’s participation at the contest. I thought about going but in the end last year I decided not to try. Last Friday, however, I resolved to go with a Bruce bud of mine, but we were not lucky at all, Jessica Springsteen was not competing that day.
So I headed home discouraged, ’cause the next day I had an important work meeting I could not miss, plus on Sunday morning there was my daughter’s gymn exhibition, it was really impossible for me to come back on Saturday evening too. And adding on the downside, I had my car broken. Well, there was no sane way I could go, and so effectively enough my wife said to me Take my car and go, be sure just to be back for the recital, and here I am racing towards Cannes on Saturday afternoon.
I paid thirty bucks for the tickets, and from my area I could see Bruce and family up up up in the very VIP sections, I did not want to disturb or impose on him, (not to mention the security), so I just waited for a while, looking at the horse show meanwhile.
Anyway after about an hour I see him climbing down the stairs towards us not very VIP people, and I approached him asking politely for a picture, but he kindly refused and I backed down. When he returned I approached him again showing two pictures I had with me, to show him I’m a true fan, not some random stalker (even if I understand I could fit in the stalker section, in a sense). Anyway, I just wanted to greet him since it’s a very long time we’ve seen in concert, and as fans we do miss him.
The pictures were of me and my daughter at two of his different shows, and he stopped and looked at them, saying Nice! Very cute, and then he accepted to have a selfie with me, and autographed my daughter’s Linda picture.

The influence of a good teacher can never be erased

Dear Bruce, I decided to write you since I did an English exam and I promised I would do it if I passed it. Well, everything went all right and now here I am to pay my debt with you.

It was in college that I really began to discover and appreciate you, to go beyond the easy listening of some of your songs, because I began to think about the lyrics. I had never studied English at school so I could hardly understand your songs, their words and their deep sense. I was taught my first steps in English by you and your music. It was a strange way to learn a foreign language, but I can say that it worked well: reading the words, translating and listening to the music were useful excercises! My life since then has gone in the direction I loved and I wanted: I am 46, I am a teacher, I teach Italian and Latin literature, I am a wife and a mother. And your music, your songs, your words have always been there with me. I did my journey through life with your music as soundtrack.

Recently, I decided that it was due time in my life to study English, for personal and professional reasons. Your example, your guide have been precious for me: when I did my English exam (just yesterday I had the results) I spoke about you and your music and I could use many words and sentences remembering your songs! The good result in English I had is dedicated to you, Bruce Springsteeen’s name is on it! My favourite songs of yours have always been Thunder Road, Born To Run, and Atlantic City: but it is really impossible for me to choose one: I love all of them. At school I’m thinking about doing a sort of thesis about your songs and/or to give my students some exercises of analysis of your songs as if they were poems (because, well, they actually ARE poems)

So, here I am: thank you for your help, Bruce, thank you for your job and your music. Just thank you.

Your fan, Rita (and thanks to my English teacher too 🙂 )
